One of BKS Iyengar's first students in the UK, Silvia Prescott, died peacefully at home yesterday, 3 November. Under Mr Iyengar's guidance, she started teaching yoga in the 1970s, and has been a hugely significant influence in the development of Iyengar yoga, especially in London, where she lived and taught. Many yoga teachers - including many in NELIYI - were trained by Silvia, a senior teacher of great experience, whose dedication and knowledge were humbling to witness. Her legacy survives in our own yoga practice and teaching, and in the fond memories we have of Silvia.
The IYI (Maida Vale), where Silvia taught for many years, now has a short website entry with links to an article and photographs of Iyengar, taken by Silvia. http://iyi.org.uk/silvia-prescott/
NELIYI joins yoga students worldwide in sending warm sympathy to Silvia's family and all those who will miss her.

We are very sad to report that one of NELIYI's most long-standing and supportive members, Paul Walker, died yesterday. For some time now, Paul had been exploring life from the perspective of one diagnosed with serious cancers, so his passing was an expected next stage. We know it will still be a shock to many, and a very great loss.
Paul was an inspiring and generous person, a huge delight to know, and significant in the development of yoga in the UK. As well as practising and teaching yoga himself, he founded Yoga Matters (where lots of us get our yoga kit) and worked on committees of NELIYI and of our national organisation. NELIYI was privileged to have had Paul as one of our few Honorary Members.
We send heartfelt sympathy and love to his family and friends.

Workshop with Wendy McGuire
Saturday, 30th January 2016 at 1:30pm - 4:30pm
At: The Harringay Club, 50 Tottenham Lane, London N8 7EE
NELIYI are very lucky to be able to offer a workshop with Wendy McGuire, an experienced yoga teacher, qualified to Senior Level 2, who has been practising Iyengar Yoga for 35 years.
Wendy’s lively teaching style and infectious enthusiasm for Iyengar Yoga inspires beginners and more experienced students alike. Many of her students have themselves gone on to become teachers.
She says: “Students and friends often ask me how yoga has changed my life. It is impossible for me to answer that question – yoga is part of my life”.
Wendy started learning with an inspiring teacher, Joy Hicks, who is still teaching in the USA. Other teachers include Dorothy Robinson, who ended up training her to become a teacher, and Penny Chaplin, with whom she still attends classes.
She currently teaches popular intermediate, general and beginners' classes in South East London.
Advance booking (click on 'Buy tickets') is necessary for this workshop, as it is likely that this will be a popular event. Please send any enquiries about this workshop to Pam firstname.lastname@example.org

This month we are offering 2 inspiring workshops.
On the 28th of November, we are delighted to welcome Aidan Love who is currently building the profile of Iyengar yoga in Istanbul, Turkey. He trained to become a teacher right here in North London and is familiar with many of us. With his new found life in Turkey, he brings a new perspective from Eastern Mediterrenian!
If you have any queries about the workshops, or wish to book offline, please email
Pam Mackenzie (email@example.com ).
On the first of November, a professional development day ( PD day), a regular event for teachers and trainees taught by an invited senior teacher. This day of learning is always an enjoyable event. Many teachers come along to ensure that they can maintain the required hours of training each year.
