• Introductory Pranayama course (4 classes)

    Tomorrow, 25th February 2018 at 5pm - 6:15pm, Sunday, 4th March 2018 at 5pm - 6:15pm, Sunday, 11th March 2018 at 5pm - 6:15pm, Sunday, 18th March 2018 at 5pm - 6:15pm
Location: The Iyengar Yoga Studio, Leicester Road, East Finchley, London N2 9EA

This series of four sessions, each of an hour and a quarter, introduces the foundations of pranayama practice, with the support of a highly experienced teacher. It is similar to the course presented in November 2017. Ros is an Intermediate Senior Level 3 teacher, who has been teaching Iyengar yoga for forty years. She has made visits to our parent Institute in Pune, and learned pranayama with BKS Iyengar himself, as well as with Geeta and Prashant Iyengar and other senior teachers in India and in the UK.

These four classes will cover the basics of lying and sitting for pranayama, as well as the practice of breathing itself. Pranayama means more than just 'breathing exercises'; it is about controlling and directing our energy. We will look at the technicalities of breathing, follow different breathing patterns and methods, and feel the connections between body, breath and mind. The sessions will also include some appropriate asana practice, postures to open the chest, to prepare for sitting, and to bring quietness.

This set of four classes are designed to be taken together, as a developing series, so you cannot book for individual sessions (the price shown here covers all four, so is very good value). It is open to anyone, at any level of yoga experience other than complete beginner, though you should have a steady body and be able to sit upright in a stable fashion, so at least a few months of regular yoga asana practice is recommended. Experienced yoga practitioners and teachers are also welcome (but please note that we are also offering a series of classes for non-beginners on the same dates - see elsewhere on this website). If you have a serious medical condition, or have any other concerns or queries, please contact us first so that this can be discussed with the teacher.

This is a foundation course, a basis for continuing practice of pranayama. Numbers are limited, and advance booking is essential, so please complete your booking as soon as you can. If you attended November's course, you are welcome to book on this one, to refresh and consolidate your learning; however, you might prefer to attend the continuation course held on the same dates.

The studio is warm, quiet and fully equipped. There is local street parking, and nearby public transport. To book your place, just click on 'Buy tickets' for secure payment online.

  • Continuing Pranayama (non-beginners) - course of four classes

    Tomorrow, 25th February 2018 at 6:30pm - 8pm, Sunday, 4th March 2018 at 6:30pm - 8pm, Sunday, 11th March 2018 at 6:30pm - 8pm, Sunday, 18th March 2018 at 6:30pm - 8pm
Location: The Iyengar Yoga Studio, Leicester Road, East Finchley, London N2 9EA

This is a series of four classes designed for those familiar with the basic practice of pranayama to take their study further. Priority in booking will be given to those who attended the Pranayama course with Ros in November 2017. However, this course is also open to others who have a grounding in pranayama practice and yoga in the Iyengar tradition.

If you're really keen, and wish to attend the 5pm class (before this one, on the same dates) as well, you can book for both together at a discounted cost - just pay the concessionary rate when you 'Buy tickets'.

More information may appear here, but you're advised to book as soon as you can. If you have any queries about these sessions, do ask Ros; or email Louise (on the contact form here) for any administrative queries.

  • Workshop with Sissi Gill

    Saturday, 10th March 2018 at 2:30pm - 5:30pm
Location: The Iyengar Yoga Studio, Leicester Road, East Finchley, London N2 9EA

Sissi tells us: I have been practising Iyengar yoga since 1979, when I joined Silva Mehta’s weekly evening classes. At that time I was a stressed academic with a young family, and the physical and mental benefits were immediately obvious to me. Over the years, I have studied with many exceptional teachers as well as with the Iyengar family in Pune. Yoga has remained my refuge, a source of nourishment and of lightness of being.

I did the first teacher training course, which was set up in the early 1980s, at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in Maida Vale. However, I soon realized that I was not mature enough to teach at that point in my life. To understand one’s limits, and to work with sensitivity and courage in order to deepen one's practice, is one of the lessons that I hope to pass on to my students. Also, that our practice is not confined to the time we spend on the mat. Yoga is how we live our lives.

My motto for 2018 is: “Do not ask what you can do to improve your asanas but ask how the asanas can improve you!”
